Electric or petrol scooter in Brussels: which one to choose?

Petrol Vespa Primavera 50 and Vespa Primavera Elettrica side by side

Electric or petrol? In Brussels the question is not the same as elsewhere: the low emission zone sets an end date for petrol scooters, and electricity costs more here than in France, where most online comparisons come from. We sell both technologies. Here are the real figures, and our advice on choosing. (By scooter we mean a moped or motor scooter, not a kick scooter.)

The short answer

  • Go electric if you ride mostly within Brussels, under 40 km a day, can charge (a socket or a removable battery) and plan to keep your scooter beyond 2029.
  • Go petrol if you make long trips, often on the Ring or outside Brussels, have no way to charge, or if the purchase price is your first criterion.
  • For a petrol 50cc, bear in mind it will be banned from Brussels from 2030.

What the LEZ changes about your choice

Electric scooters and motorcycles enter the low emission zone without restriction. For petrol, the timetable is set:

  • Petrol 50cc scooter: Euro 5 required from 2028, banned from 1 January 2030. A new 50cc bought today can therefore ride in Brussels until 31 December 2029.
  • Petrol 125cc and above: Euro 4 from 2028, Euro 5 from 2030, banned from 2035. A new 125 (Euro 5) can ride there until 31 December 2034.
  • Antwerp and Ghent: their LEZs do not cover two-wheelers.

The details are in our article on the LEZ and two-wheelers. For a 50cc it is often the deciding factor: the 2030 date will also weigh on its resale value.

The real cost in Brussels

Calculated for 5,000 km a year, with petrol at €2.06 a litre and electricity at €0.40 per kWh (average Brussels household price), manufacturer consumption figures, plus 10% charging losses. Sale prices in October 2026.

What to take away

  • Electric costs about three times less to run, saving €175 to €195 a year over 5,000 km. That is less than foreign comparisons suggest, because Brussels electricity costs almost twice as much.
  • Electric is often dearer to buy: energy savings alone take 4 to 5 years to make up a €800 to €1,000 gap. Not always: the CFMOTO AE8 SE costs less than a Vespa Primavera 125.
  • Maintenance is lighter for electric: no oil change, no spark plug, no filter. Tyres and brakes wear the same way.
  • The more you ride, the more electric pays off, within the limits of its range.

Range, in real life

Our electric scooters claim 40 to 105 km of range depending on the model (WMTC cycle). In practice, expect less: in cold weather batteries often lose 20 to 30% of their range, and Brussels hills, speed and a passenger also count. Choose a claimed range at least twice your daily trip. Several models have two batteries, to double the range.

Charging without a garage

  • A removable battery is the answer in a flat: most of our electric scooters have one, which charges from an ordinary socket in 2.5 to 6 hours depending on the model.
  • In a covered residential car park, do not plug your scooter into a car park socket: in Brussels, only dedicated charging points may be used to charge a vehicle. In car parks with 10 or more spaces, Brussels Environment provides a right to a charging point for residents who own an electric vehicle. Talk to your building manager.
  • For safety, use the original charger, charge in a room with a smoke detector, never in a corridor or stairwell, and not while you are away.

Licence, taxes and grants

  • Licence: an electric scooter limited to 45 km/h can be ridden with an AM licence from age 16, or with a B licence. An electric 125 equivalent (up to 11 kW) requires an A1 licence, or a B licence held for over two years plus a 4-hour course. It is all in our guide to motorcycle and scooter licences.
  • Taxes: in Brussels, a 45 km/h scooter, electric or petrol, pays neither registration tax nor annual road tax. For a 125 equivalent, electric or petrol, the registration tax is roughly €50 to €80 depending on the Region.
  • Grants: there is currently no Brussels regional grant for buying an electric scooter. The Bruxell'Air grant, given when you give up your car, explicitly excludes scooters and mopeds (only speed pedelecs qualify).

When petrol remains the best choice

  • You ride more than 50 km a day, or make long trips outside Brussels.
  • You often use the Ring or motorways: a petrol 125 is more at ease there than most electrics.
  • You have no way to charge.
  • You want the lowest purchase price: a new Euro 5 125 can ride in Brussels until 2035.

Try before you choose

The best way to decide is still to try both. Come and see us in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert: we have both technologies, from electric scooters to 50cc scooters and 125s, and our workshop services both. Thinking of a used one? Read our guide to buying a used two-wheeler first. A question? Contact us.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a full charge cost?

For a 2.3 kWh battery, like the Vespa Elettrica's or the Piaggio 1+'s, about €1 in Brussels.

Is an electric scooter as fast as a 125?

The 125-equivalent models, such as the Segway E250S or the CFMOTO AE8 SE, reach 90 km/h. The 45 km/h versions replace a 50cc, not a 125.

Can my petrol 50cc scooter still ride in Brussels?

Yes until 31 December 2027 without conditions, then until 31 December 2029 if it is Euro 5. From 2030, no petrol 50cc may enter the zone.

Is there a grant for an electric scooter in Brussels?

Not at present. The Bruxell'Air grant does not fund scooters or mopeds, only bicycles, speed pedelecs and other mobility services (public transport, car sharing).

Can I charge in my building's car park?

Not from an ordinary car park socket. Take the battery home to charge it, or ask your building manager to install a charging point.
