Brussels LEZ: which scooters and motorcycles can still ride, and until when?

Since 1 January 2026, the cameras of the Brussels low emission zone (LEZ) also check motorcycles and scooters. The timetable is set until 2035 and it does not treat all two-wheelers the same way: a 50cc petrol scooter will be banned five years before a motorcycle. Here are the rules, step by step, and how to find out where your vehicle stands.
The key points in 30 seconds
- The zone: all 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Cameras read number plates.
- 50cc petrol scooter: no restriction today, Euro 5 minimum from 2028, banned from 2030.
- 125cc, 300cc scooters and petrol motorcycles: Euro 3 minimum today, Euro 4 from 2028, Euro 5 from 2030, banned from 2035.
- Electric scooters and motorcycles: no restriction.
- Penalty: a warning first, then a 350 € fine if the vehicle is not brought into compliance.
- Antwerp and Ghent: two-wheelers are not covered by their LEZ.
The timetable, vehicle by vehicle
Each step takes effect on 1 January of the year shown. What matters is your vehicle's Euro standard, not the date you bought it.
50cc scooters and petrol mopeds
This covers class A mopeds (25 km/h) and class B mopeds (45 km/h), so every 50cc petrol scooter.
- Until 31 December 2027: no restriction, whatever the age of the scooter.
- From 1 January 2028: Euro 5 minimum.
- From 1 January 2030: no petrol mopeds at all in the zone.
In practice, most 50cc scooters registered before 2021 will no longer be allowed into Brussels from 2028. A new Euro 5 50cc bought today can ride there until 31 December 2029.
125cc and 300cc scooters and petrol motorcycles
This covers all motorcycles: scooters of 125cc and above, motorcycles, and also three-wheelers such as the Piaggio MP3.
- Since 1 January 2026: Euro 3 minimum. Euro 1, Euro 2 and pre-Euro motorcycles are already banned.
- From 1 January 2028: Euro 4 minimum.
- From 1 January 2030: Euro 5 minimum.
- From 1 January 2035: no petrol scooters or motorcycles at all.
Electric scooters and motorcycles
Electric scooters and motorcycles can enter without restriction and without any formalities, provided they are registered in Belgium. The same goes for speed pedelecs and e-bikes.
How to find the Euro standard of your scooter or motorcycle
- Look at box V.9 of your registration certificate. The standard is written there, for example « EURO 4 ».
- If the box is empty, check the European certificate of conformity (COC) supplied with the new vehicle.
- Check online on lez.brussels, the official LEZ website, which offers a simulator.
- Still unsure? Bring your papers to our workshop and we will check with you.
As a rough guide, here are the usual reference points based on the date of first registration of a new vehicle:
- from 2021: normally Euro 5 (Euro 5+ for the most recent models);
- from 2017 to 2020: usually Euro 4;
- from 2007 to 2016: usually Euro 3 for motorcycles and 125cc scooters.
These reference points do not replace box V.9: some end-of-series models were registered after the standard changed. If in doubt, the standard written on your papers is what counts.
What do you risk with a non-compliant vehicle?
- A warning letter for the first recorded offence.
- A 350 € fine if the vehicle is not brought into compliance, from three months after that first offence. One fine covers a 12-month period.
For an occasional trip, a day pass costs 20 € for a motorcycle. You buy it on lez.brussels, before your trip or within 5 days afterwards at the latest, with a maximum of 24 passes per year and per number plate.
What could change in 2027
On 16 July 2026, the Brussels government approved a reform of the LEZ. The timetable stays the same, but an annual pass of 350 € (200 € for people entitled to the increased reimbursement status) would allow you to keep riding a banned vehicle for up to five years. The text still has to go before the Council of State: it is not in force today. We will update this article as soon as it is adopted.
What about the rest of Belgium?
The Antwerp and Ghent LEZs only cover cars, vans, lorries and tractors. Mopeds and motorcycles are admitted without conditions. A rider coming from Flanders is therefore free at home, but subject to the Brussels rules as soon as they enter the Region.
Which two-wheeler to choose for riding in Brussels in the coming years?
If you live or work in Brussels, how long you will be able to use your vehicle matters as much as its price. Our guidelines:
- A new 50cc scooter is Euro 5: it can ride in Brussels until 31 December 2029. A good first scooter from age 16, or a good choice if you mostly ride outside Brussels. All our new 50cc scooters are Euro 5 or Euro 5+.
- A new 125cc or 300cc scooter, or a new motorcycle, is at least Euro 5: it can ride in Brussels until 31 December 2034. See our 125cc scooters, our 300cc and larger scooters and our motorcycles.
- An electric scooter has no end date in the LEZ. In the 45 km/h version, you can ride it with an AM licence from age 16, or with a B licence. See our electric scooters.
- A used vehicle: check the standard before you buy. A Euro 4 motorcycle bought today will no longer be allowed into Brussels in 2030. For each of our used vehicles, we will tell you its Euro standard on request.
