Winter storage for scooters and motorcycles: store or ride on in Belgium

Aprilia SR GT scooter fitted with its genuine winter leg cover

In Belgium, most motorcycles spend the winter in the garage, while many scooters keep running every day. Either way, a few simple steps prevent the classic spring surprises: a flat battery, stale fuel, a flat-spotted tyre. Here is what we tell our customers, including the Belgian rules on insurance and number plates.

The short answer

  • If you store it: a full tank with stabiliser, a maintenance charger on the battery, tyres pumped up and a dry place. Keep it insured if it stays on the street.
  • If you ride on: rinse off the salt, keep an eye on the battery and tyre pressure, and protect your hands and legs from the cold.
  • Either way, do not idle the engine "to keep it in shape": it does more harm than good.

Storing it: insurance, number plate and tax in Belgium

Parked on the street, it must stay insured

Belgian law only allows a motor vehicle on the public road if its third-party liability is covered by an insurance contract that is not suspended. A scooter or motorcycle that spends the winter parked on the street must therefore stay insured, even if it is not ridden.

In a private garage, talk to your insurer

Some contracts let you suspend the insurance while the vehicle is laid up. Conditions vary from one insurer to another: ask what remains covered during the suspension (theft, fire), and do not take the vehicle out, even for a few metres, before the cover is back in force.

Cancelling the plate: rarely worth it

Cancelling the number plate ends the road tax. Since 1 August 2025, only the DIV can cancel a plate: send it packed and properly stamped to DIV, 1212 Brussels, or drop it off at Rue du Progrès 56, 1210 Brussels. Cancellation takes effect on the day it is received, and the plate must arrive 5 days before the end of the month to be cancelled that month.

  • 50cc or 125 scooter, motorcycle up to 250 cc: no annual road tax, so nothing to save.
  • Motorcycle over 250 cc: the annual tax is €76.03 in Brussels and Wallonia and €75.90 in Flanders. A few months' saving rarely covers the hassle and cost of registering it again in the spring.
  • Our advice: only cancel the plate for a long lay-up, a year or more.

Preparing for storage, step by step

  • Go for a last ride to warm up the engine, then wash and dry the vehicle thoroughly, especially if it has been on salted roads. Protect unpainted metal parts with a suitable product, but never the brake discs, tyres or seat.
  • Fill the tank and add a fuel stabiliser: the E10 petrol sold in Belgium contains 10% ethanol, which absorbs moisture. After a few months, water and deposits can clog the injection. A full tank also limits condensation.
  • Connect a maintenance charger: the battery is the number one cause of breakdowns in spring. An automatic charger can stay connected all winter; otherwise remove the battery, keep it dry and frost-free, and recharge it every 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Pump up the tyres to about 0.5 bar above the usual pressure, and put the vehicle on its centre stand if possible, so a tyre does not flat-spot.
  • Lubricate the chain on a motorcycle, ideally right after the last ride while it is still warm.
  • Check the coolant: it must protect against frost. If it is more than two or three years old, have it replaced.
  • Choose a dry, ventilated, frost-free place, and use a breathable cover, never a plastic sheet that traps moisture. Outdoors, an outdoor cover and a lock attached to a fixed point are a must.

An electric scooter is simpler to store: keep the battery indoors, at room temperature, never empty, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for charging it over the winter.

Do not start the engine "to keep it in shape"

Idling the engine for a few minutes never brings it up to temperature. Condensation stays in the engine and exhaust, and the battery loses more charge than it gains. Leave it alone until spring, or go for a proper half-hour ride.

Riding through the winter

  • Rinse off the salt with clean water after every ride on salted roads, especially underneath. Salt attacks the exhaust, spokes, fasteners and electrical connectors.
  • Watch your tyre pressure: it drops in the cold. Winter tyres are not compulsory in Belgium, and on a scooter they only really help on snow. Tyres in good condition at the right pressure matter more.
  • Look after the battery: cold reduces its capacity, and short trips do not give it time to recharge. A maintenance charger overnight is no luxury if you only ride a few kilometres a day.
  • Be visible: it gets dark early. Check the headlight, rear light and indicators, and wear light-coloured or reflective clothing.
  • Brake gently on road markings, manhole covers and wet cobbles, and leave more distance.

Protecting your hands and legs

Your hands feel the cold first. On a scooter, the most effective solutions are also the cheapest: handlebar muffs and a leg cover, which block wind and rain. We offer them for many of the models we sell:

  • Handlebar muffs: €51.45 from SYM, €69 from Vespa and Piaggio.
  • Leg covers: €109 to €229 depending on the model.
  • SYM winter packs (leg cover and muffs): €119 to €158.
  • SYM AL300 Pro maintenance charger: €22.78.

To go further, heated grips and heated gloves each have their strengths: we compare them in our article heated grips or heated gloves. Remember that from a 125 upwards, and on a motorcycle, gloves are compulsory, as explained in our article on mandatory gear.

Back on the road in spring

  • Reinstate the insurance before the first ride if you had suspended it.
  • Fully charge the battery before starting.
  • Bring the tyres back to their normal pressure and check their condition.
  • Check the brakes, lights and fluid levels.
  • Take the first few kilometres easy.

Spring is also the right time for the annual service. To avoid the rush of the first sunny days, book a workshop appointment as winter ends.

At Eddy Sport

Muffs, leg covers, covers and genuine heated accessories are available for your model from Vespa, Piaggio, SYM, Aprilia and CFMOTO. Our workshop in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert fits them, and also helps when a scooter will not start after the winter. Any questions? Contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to insure my motorcycle if I do not ride it in winter?

Yes, if it stays on the public road, even parked. In a private garage, your insurer may agree to suspend the cover, depending on your contract.

Should I start the engine from time to time?

No. A few minutes of idling creates condensation and drains the battery. Leave the vehicle at rest with a maintenance charger, or go for a proper ride.

Can I leave my scooter outside all winter?

Yes, with a breathable outdoor cover, a lock attached to a fixed point and valid insurance. Rinse it if it has been on salted roads before covering it.

Do I need winter tyres on a scooter?

They are not compulsory in Belgium and only make a real difference on snow. For city riding, tyres in good condition at the right pressure are enough.
